Middle Eastern brides often wear two kinds of outfit: a white gown for the wedding itself and a traditional dress for the henna night or a second celebration. The traditional look changes by country. Palestinian brides wear hand-embroidered thobes, Moroccan brides layer takchitas and caftans with several outfit changes, Yemeni brides from Sana'a wear elaborate crowns and jewellery, and brides in the Gulf are known for henna nights with richly embroidered gowns. The Palestinian thobe is a long, loose robe with sleeves, and the most elaborate ones are embroidered wedding dresses. Embroidery patterns and colours varied from region to region, so a thobe could show where a woman came from. Bethlehem was famous for its couching stitch on the malak ("queen") wedding dress; the source notes the groom paid for the wedding dress, so its embroidery displayed status.
In December 2025, UNESCO added the Moroccan caftan to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, describing it as worn for important occasions including weddings. A takchita is a two-layer version: an under-dress with an open over-robe, joined by an ornate belt. It's the classic bridal outfit.
The Sana'a bride is one of the most distinctive in the region. The Zay Initiative, a nonprofit archive of Arab dress, describes her tall crown, elaborate silver jewellery and heavily decorated dress. Traditional Yemeni dress varies strongly between cities and regions, so Aden, Hadramawt and Sana'a brides look very different.
Henna is at the heart of bridal preparation across the Gulf. In 2024, UNESCO inscribed henna rituals and aesthetic and social practices on its Representative List, nominated jointly by a group of Arab countries including the United Arab Emirates. At the henna night, the bride's hands and feet are decorated, and she often wears an embroidered gown, traditionally green in many Gulf families, with gold jewellery. For the wedding party itself, many brides in the Gulf wear a white gown, and women's celebrations are often held separately from men's.
In Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, brides usually wear a white gown for the wedding, and the traditional flavour comes from the zaffe, the henna night and jewellery rather than a particular dress. See Lebanese wedding traditions for how the day works.
Gold is central to bridal dress across the Middle East, from coin headdresses in Palestine to the gold sets often given to brides in the Gulf and Levant. Many Muslim brides across the region choose gowns with long sleeves and high necklines, sometimes with a hijab styled with a veil or headpiece. Others don't cover, depending on belief, family and where the wedding is. When a celebration is women-only, brides may wear more fitted or revealing gowns there than at mixed events.
Ask about the henna night. It often has its own outfit, guest list and music. Plan the changes. A Moroccan-style night can have several outfit changes; build time into the schedule. Borrow heirlooms.
