How to work out what your wedding costs per guest, which costs grow with every guest and which don't, and what a recent survey of newlyweds says they spent.
It depends mostly on catering, which is why the most useful number is the one you work out yourself. Add up the costs that grow with each guest (food, drink, rentals, invitations) and divide by your guest count, then add a share of the fixed costs like the venue, photographer and attire. Get two or three real per-person catering quotes early. They are the single biggest variable in the budget.
The per-guest figure hides an important split. Some costs rise with every guest you add, and some barely move.

That's why cutting 20 guests saves less than 20 times your average cost per guest. You save the scaling costs for those 20 people, but the fixed costs stay the same.

In a LendingTree survey of 1,050 US newlyweds in March 2025, total spending was spread widely:

The same survey found 67% of newlyweds took on wedding-related debt, 32% went over budget, and 34% felt pressured to spend more than they were comfortable with. The venue was the most common regret: 23% wished they had spent less on it.
