Reception activities for guests who don't dance, grouped by when they happen and how much setup they take, plus how to keep a no-dancing reception lively.
Give guests something to do at the table, something to wander to, and something to watch. Table games and a couple trivia quiz work during dinner. Lawn games, a photo booth and a guest book station give people somewhere to go. A live performance or a short slideshow gives everyone something to watch together. You don't need all of them. Two or three, spread across the evening, fill the gaps a dance floor usually fills.

You sit back to back and hold up a shoe to answer "who is more likely to…" questions. Table scavenger hunt. A card listing things to find or do: someone who has known you longest, a selfie with the officiant. Advice cards. Guests write marriage advice or date-night ideas for you to open on each anniversary. Mad libs. A fill-in-the-blank version of your love story, read out later. Guess the date. Guests guess how long you've been together, or the number of sweets in a jar. Song requests. A card or link for guests to suggest the songs they want to hear.
Photo booth with a few props, or an instant camera on each table. Guest book station with a twist: a record to sign, a jigsaw puzzle, a globe. Audio or video guest book where guests record a message for you. Lawn games: giant Jenga, cornhole, croquet, bocce. Pinterest reported searches for "cornhole boards wedding" up 440% in 2026. Letter-writing desk with stationery for guests to write you a letter. Polaroid wall where guests pin their photo and a note. Flower bar where guests build a small posy to take home. Tarot, palm or caricature artist in a quiet corner. Cigar or whiskey tasting for an evening reception. Dessert or s'mores station outdoors.
A live band or acoustic set during dinner. A short slideshow of the two of you growing up. Keep it under five minutes. A surprise performance by a friend or relative. A live painter capturing the reception. Fireworks, sparklers or a lantern moment (check your venue's rules). A cultural performance meaningful to your families. A toast from every table. One sentence each, in turn.
Longer, slower dinner with more courses and more conversation. A quiz or game played across the room, with a prize for the winning table. A group activity like a ceilidh caller or a line-dance instructor for the brave. An after-party room with games and snacks. Speeches spread out between courses rather than in one block. A planned send-off so the evening has a clear ending.
Put them in the timeline. An activity nobody announces is an activity nobody finds. Ask your DJ or MC to mention them. Match them to your guests. Lawn games suit a garden party, not a black-tie ballroom. Put stations where people already go: near the bar, on the route to the restrooms, by the terrace doors. Keep sign-in simple. Anything that needs an app download won't be used.
