What black tie, black tie optional, white tie, formal and cocktail attire mean on a wedding invitation, for men and women, with a quick table to compare.
Black tie on a wedding invitation means formal evening wear. For men that's a tuxedo (a dinner jacket) with a bow tie; for women, a floor-length evening gown, or a very dressy cocktail dress or evening separates. It's the most common formal dress code at weddings and usually signals an evening event. "Black tie optional" is a step down: a tuxedo is welcome, but a dark suit and tie is fine too.

The black tie and black tie optional rows follow the Emily Post Institute's black tie guide; the others are common usage. Couples and regions use these terms a little differently, so treat the table as a starting point.
The Emily Post Institute calls black tie the most common formal dress code for weddings, formal dinners and similar events.
For men: a black tuxedo jacket with matching trousers, a formal white shirt, a bow tie, a cummerbund or waistcoat, and black patent or highly polished shoes. In summer or at a tropical wedding, a white dinner jacket may be worn instead of black.
For women: a floor-length evening gown is the classic choice, and a dressy cocktail dress can also work. Rich evening fabrics fit the dress code better than daytime cottons.
Renting a tuxedo is completely normal; you don't need to own one.
This means the couple would love guests in black tie but won't mind if you're not.
