How to get your first wedding planning clients

How new wedding planners find their first clients: set up properly, sell one clear package, build proof, use your network, earn venue referrals and be easy to find.

Most new planners find their first clients through people who already know them and through vendors who have seen them work. Set the business up properly first (registered, insured, with a contract), sell one package you can explain in a sentence, build proof by assisting another planner or coordinating a friend's wedding, tell your whole network, introduce yourself to venue coordinators, claim a Google Business Profile and reply to every enquiry within a day. None of this is a formula; it is what new planners commonly do.

The market you are entering

Wedding planning is a small-business trade. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 172,100 meeting, convention and event planner jobs in 2025, projects 6% growth from 2025 to 2035, and says 10% of the field is self-employed. It also notes that wedding planners are the best known kind of event planner, which tells you something useful: couples already understand what you do. Your job is to make them believe you can do it for them.

Set up before you take money

Register the business, open a separate bank account, get insurance and have a contract before the first retainer arrives. The tax rules differ by market, and these are the starting points.

For insurance, ask a broker about general or public liability and professional indemnity cover. Some venues ask every supplier for proof of insurance, and a planner who can send a certificate the same day looks established. For the contract, the planner contract guide covers the clauses, and a local lawyer should review it.

Sell one package you can explain in a sentence

New planners often offer every tier at once. Start with one. Day-of (or month-of) coordination is the most common first package, because couples who have already booked their vendors still need someone to run the day, and it needs fewer months of commitment from you. The day-of pricing guide shows published fee ranges in all four markets, and the planner pricing calculator works out a fee from your hours.

Whether to price low for your first weddings is your call. If you do, do it on purpose, for a set number of weddings, and say so in writing, so the price rises on schedule rather than staying low because raising it feels awkward.

Build proof before you have clients

Couples hire planners they trust, and trust comes from evidence. Ways new planners commonly build it:

Tell the people who already know you

Your first clients are likely to be one or two steps from you: a colleague's sister, a friend from a club, a former classmate. Tell people plainly what you now do and who it is for. A short message to your contacts and a post on your own social accounts are free, and the people who already trust you are the ones most likely to pass your name on.

Make venue coordinators and vendors your referrers

Venue coordinators meet every couple who books their venue, and some of those couples will ask them to recommend a planner. Introduce yourself, ask how the venue likes outside planners to work, and follow their rules to the letter at your first wedding there. The venue coordinator vs wedding planner guide explains how the two jobs fit, which is the conversation to have.

The same goes for photographers, florists and DJs. Vendors refer planners who make their day easier: an arrival schedule sent two weeks out, a fed crew, a run of show that matches what actually happens. That is reputation you earn at the wedding, not on social media.

Be easy to find

Answer every enquiry fast and the same way

Reply within a working day, with a short message that thanks them, answers their question, gives a starting price and offers a call. Keep it as a template you personalize, so speed never costs quality. After the call, send a proposal and the contract together, and follow up once if you hear nothing.

Turn the first wedding into the next three

After each wedding, ask the couple for a review while the day is fresh, ask whether they know anyone recently engaged, and thank every vendor in writing. Ask the photographer for permission to use a handful of images, credited. Your first client's wedding is the best marketing your second one will have.

How Forever Farrah helps planners

The free tools on the planners page work without an account, and with a free planner account you can save their results as PDFs and download the templates, so you can build sample documents before your first booking. When the first client signs, the planner dashboard keeps their guest list, RSVPs and seating chart in one place you and the couple both see, with Matchmaker (automatic seating) placing guests at tables in seconds and a QR code guests scan to find their table. Your first 2 client weddings are free, so the tools cost nothing until the business is running.

Frequently asked questions

How do new wedding planners get clients?

Mostly through people they already know and through referrals from venues and vendors they have worked well with, backed by a clear package, a portfolio and a Google Business Profile.

What package should a new wedding planner offer first?

Many start with day-of or month-of coordination, because couples who have already booked vendors still need someone to run the day. Add partial and full planning once you have the experience and the referrals.

Should a new planner work for free?

That is a business decision. Many new planners assist established planners or coordinate a friend's wedding to build experience. If you discount, do it for a set number of weddings, in writing, so your price rises on schedule.
